This week, we are delighted to share a recent workshop with the Master of Architecture students at The University of Hong Kong, where we kicked off the new academic year with a conversation about AI, design, and professional responsibility.
AI in architectural education
AAL joined the HKU MArch cohort to explore what AI is beginning to change across architecture, engineering, and construction, as well as what it should not replace.
Rather than focusing only on headlines or the latest tools, the session focused on intentional use. AI can help designers explore ideas, test alternatives, and communicate design narratives more quickly. However, it cannot replace the human judgment required to frame a brief, understand context, evaluate trade-offs, and take responsibility for a final design decision.
This distinction is especially important for emerging architects. AI literacy is not simply knowing how to write a prompt. It is knowing how to ask the right design question, assess whether an output is relevant and credible, and decide what should move forward.
From early concept to visual output
We also delivered a hands-on AI visualisation workshop, giving students an opportunity to experiment with xFigura and turn early concepts into architectural images and 3D outputs. xFigura supports AI-powered workflows across text, image, and 3D generation, making it a useful environment for rapid exploration and communication during early design stages.
The workshop gave students a first taste of how AI visualisation can support design thinking. The purpose was not to treat AI output as a finished answer, but to use it as a starting point for discussion, iteration, and more informed design development.
