GPT 6 Astra: Toward spatial AI workflows

OpenAI recently introduced GPT 6 Astra, a model designed for complex reasoning, coding, computer use, and multi step work. It accepts both text and image inputs, supports Model Context Protocol, or MCP, and has a context window of up to 1.05 million tokens. Together, these capabilities make it more practical for AI agents to retain substantial project context and use connected tools rather than simply respond in a text conversation.

For AEC professionals, the important signal is not a benchmark score. It is the potential change in workflow.

Until now, many AI interactions have followed a simple pattern: ask a question, receive an answer, then manually apply that answer in a model, drawing, spreadsheet, rendering tool, or project platform. With an agent connected to approved software through MCP, the interaction could become more direct. A designer may be able to provide a reference image, describe the desired lighting or material mood, and instruct an agent to make corresponding changes within a live 3D environment.

For example:

“Use this mood-board image as a reference. Review the current scene, adjust the sun direction and lighting to better match the mood, and test a polished-concrete flooring option.”

This does not remove the need for professional judgment. Architects and engineers must still define the design intent, verify the outcome, control the source data, and take responsibility for decisions. But it does suggest a move from AI as a helpful adviser toward AI as an active, supervised participant in a workflow.

The practical implication is that firms should start looking beyond isolated chatbot tasks. The bigger opportunity lies in identifying repetitive, context-heavy work that could benefit from safe connections between AI, project information, and the software teams already use. GPT 6 Astra is currently rolling out gradually to organizations and users through OpenAI products and its API.

The theme is “Agents Everywhere: Beyond the Chatbot.” It starts from a simple premise: the most useful agents should meet people where they already work. Instead of asking users to open another chat window, teams are challenged to place an agent inside real work, communication channels, software, devices, or physical environments, and make it genuinely more useful because of that context.

This is especially relevant to the AEC sector. The next generation of practical AI may not appear as another standalone prompt box. It may appear within a coordination workflow, a design environment, a project dashboard, a site process, or an operational system where the right context allows it to assist meaningfully.

Last week, I ran a single interior render through 20 consecutive edits in Gendo AI, using two different tools. Edit Tool for geometry-level changes and Swap Material Tool for precise surface swaps. The goal was to see exactly where an AI editing workflow starts making its own decisions.

A clear pattern emerged quickly. Straight lines and hard geometry held beautifully, cabinet fronts, panelling, and chair frames all stayed consistently clean.

Organic, curved forms were a different story. A sofa came back with a faint synthetic softness. A side table warped into a suspiciously perfect cylinder. A rug vanished the moment I changed the flooring beneath it, a ceramic vase, sitting among several others in the same selection, simply refused to change.

When I asked it to render every “carved wooden figure” in white marble, it correctly left one sculpture untouched, since it wasn’t actually wood, a small act of quiet defiance.

The most useful insight came from elsewhere. A Gendo workshop posted four weeks ago offered a clue worth testing. Their team explained that when adding new elements to a scene, a more generous selection tends to blend more naturally than a tightly cropped one, since the model needs the extra surrounding context to render convincing shadows and integration. It ran counter to instinct, but held up under testing.

Twenty edits in, the takeaway isn’t that Gendo is flawless. It’s that its instincts are good enough to trust for the obvious changes, and precise enough in its limits that you always know exactly where to step back in.

As we keep testing platforms like this across the AAL community, we’ll keep sharing what proves reliable, and where the model shows its limits.

High Adoption but Low Optimism

The most striking takeaway is the sheer speed of AI integration. The report shows a massive adoption surge across the industry. Usage has grown from 41% in 2024 to 59% in 2025 and has now reached a staggering 74% in 2026.

However, this widespread use is not translating into professional confidence. Only 17% of respondents agree that AI makes them more optimistic about the future of architecture. The data also highlights a growing divide in the market, showing that large companies are adopting AI at a much faster rate than smaller practices. This raises important questions about competitive advantage and resource allocation in the near future.

The Reality of Implementation

Despite the high adoption rate, true integration remains rare. Most professionals are still treating AI as an experimental asset rather than a core operational tool. The survey reveals that 62% of people are still in the early exploration stage. Only a small fraction, just 15% of respondents, report having AI fully embedded into their actual work.

Even with this slow deep integration, the overall sentiment shows a strong interest and willingness to invest in future AI development. Firms know they need to figure this out and are preparing to allocate resources to make it happen.

The Governance Gap

Perhaps the most urgent finding is the lack of internal regulation. Only 19% of respondents indicate that their practice has an official AI policy in place. This reveals a massive governance gap across the industry. Firms are actively experimenting with new tools, but they lack the guardrails needed to control data security, verify design outputs, and manage client confidentiality properly.

As the industry changes, a critical conversation is emerging.

Architects are supposed to draw. They are meant to design.

But for some time now, more of what they do has become project management. Many expertise has been outsourced to sustainability experts, bim managers, landscape architects, etc.

That was pre-GenAI.

Today, architects face some changes. Which part of architectural work is the most valued?

⚪️ Unmasking the “Drawing”

For decades, the value of an architect has been masked by the act of “drawing.” Because the final deliverable is a set of blueprints or a 3D model, the profession is often reduced to the manual labor of producing those files.

But the real work of architecture happens long before the mouse clicks.

It is the ability to understand a client’s ambiguous needs, navigate strict regulatory constraints, coordinate conflicting engineering disciplines, and synthesize a chaotic mess of data into a single, buildable, logical system.

The drawing is just the output. The actual value is the synthesis and judgment.

⚪️ AI Forces the Pivot

This distinction has never been more important than it is right now.

As AI tools rapidly improve at automating the output by handling routine drafting, generating rapid visualizations, and performing code-compliance checks, the manual production side of architecture is becoming commoditized.

If your primary value to a firm or a client is simply your speed in CAD or your ability to render, AI is a direct threat.

However, if your primary value is your ability to solve complex spatial problems, negotiate stakeholder requirements, and exercise design judgment, AI is a massive amplifier.

We are entering an era where you no longer need to spend the majority of your time on manual execution. The question becomes: what do you do with that reclaimed time?

🔄 Translating Your Skills

For many, this means a shift in identity. We are seeing architects begin to “translate” their core skills into new avenues.

The ability to manage complex project data is highly transferable to tech product management.

The ability to synthesize stakeholder needs is the foundation of strategic consulting.

But even for those staying strictly within traditional practice, the day-to-day role will change.

The architect of the future will look less like a draftsperson and more like a Spatial Editor.

This role involves curating AI-generated options, applying human empathy to design decisions, and managing the strategic direction of a project.

The firms and individuals who will thrive in the next decade are those who stop defining themselves by the software they use or the drawings they produce, and start defining themselves by the complex problems they are uniquely equipped to solve.

Instead of generalized advice, the assessment helps you understand your firm’s specific position—whether you are just starting out with ad-hoc individual experiments or are already moving toward integrating AI systematically into your practice.

The conversation around AI in architecture is shifting from “what can this technology do?” to “how do we actually implement it safely and effectively?”

For a lot of firms—especially small and mid-sized practices—the hardest part of AI adoption is governance and strategy. The AIA toolkit bridges this gap by offering:

• Tailored Next Steps: Based on your assessment results, you receive actionable guidance appropriate for your firm’s current stage.

• Focus on Governance: It helps firms start thinking critically about internal AI policies, data security, and responsible use, rather than just experimenting blindly.

Illoca: Reworking the design interface

This week, we’re highlighting illoca, an AI-native design platform built for professional architects. As Connor’s article makes clear, the core problem illoca is addressing is not simply speed, but the amount of time architects spend translating ideas into software. Illoca’s Tracing Paper product is designed to reduce that friction by allowing users to sketch, mark up, reference images, and use natural language, while AI helps convert those inputs into editable 2D and 3D outputs.

What makes this interesting is the workflow it points to. Instead of forcing architects to move through rigid software steps, illoca suggests a more fluid design process where AI acts as a collaborator inside the early stages of design development. That could mean faster iteration, less manual modeling, and a better bridge between concept exploration and more detailed downstream BIM and CAD workflows.

The broader implication for AEC is creative continuity. If this approach matures, architects may be able to stay in the design flow longer, test more options earlier, and spend less time on the repetitive translation work that often slows projects down. That is the real shift: not just better output, but a more natural design experience.

Fable 5: Long-horizon execution

We are also covering Anthropic’s Fable 5, which signals that AI is moving into long-horizon execution. Anthropic describes it as its most capable public model yet, built to work autonomously for longer than previous Claude models, which matters because it shifts AI from short answers to sustained multi-step work across coding, reasoning, and complex knowledge tasks.

For AEC, that matters because it points toward AI support for deeper coordination, document handling, and multi-step workflow assistance instead of only one-off outputs. In practice, that could open the door to more capable project support tools that can hold context across longer tasks and help teams manage complexity more effectively.

At the same time, the suspension of access is a governance warning. Anthropic said it disabled Fable 5 after a U.S. government directive, and the public response shows how quickly frontier AI becomes a policy issue once capability crosses a certain threshold.

The takeaway is twofold. Fable 5 shows what frontier AI can now do, and it also shows how fragile access, oversight, and compliance still are around those capabilities. For the industry, the question is no longer whether AI can do more, but how to use it responsibly and reliably at scale.

At the same time, it reinforces the need for human judgment in areas such as constructability, code compliance, and regulatory review, where professional expertise remains essential.

The key opportunity lies in combining spatial AI with existing BIM, design, and compliance workflows to improve both speed and decision-making quality across the project lifecycle.

The symposium brought together senior executives from across the technology, infrastructure, and enterprise sectors — including the General Manager of NVIDIA AI Technology Center HK, the Managing Director of Digital at AECOM, senior leaders from HKT, Hikvision, Lenovo, Novelte Robotics, and a professor from HKU Business School — to examine what the shift from automation to autonomous AI systems means for corporate leadership and strategy.

Here are the key observations Adeline shared from 2-3 years of working at the intersection of AI, real estate, architecture, engineering, construction, and operations.

1 - The Adoption Gap Nobody Talks About

One of the most persistent tensions in enterprise AI adoption is not technological — it is organisational. Senior management wants their teams to implement AI. But frontline workers are frequently not given the time or resources to actually do so. The mandate comes from the top; the bandwidth does not follow.

This gap is not a technology problem. It is a management problem, and it will not be solved by better tools alone.

2 - Why Company Size Matters More Than You Think

AI adoption does not look the same across organisations, and the differences are more structural than most leaders acknowledge.

Large corporations tend to do well. They have unified data infrastructure, dedicated R&D budgets, and the organisational weight to enforce adoption. Small companies, by contrast, are lean enough to pivot fast — they learn quickly and become competitive precisely because they are not encumbered by legacy processes.

It is the mid-sized company that often struggles most. They have neither the data infrastructure of a large enterprise nor the agility of a small firm. They sit in a difficult middle ground where AI adoption requires the most deliberate strategy and the most careful resource allocation.

3 - Three Formats of AI Adoption

For organisations at any scale, AI adoption typically takes one of three forms:

1. Proof of concept — internal pilots that test feasibility before committing resources

2. Service — engaging AI consultants or professionals who can deploy AI within existing workflows

3. Training — upskilling staff through structured AI workshops so the capability is built in-house

The right format depends on the organisation’s readiness, risk appetite, and strategic timeline. Most organisations will move through all three over time.

4 - What the Future Looks Like — In Brief

The macro trajectory is becoming clearer. Heavy investment in AI is coming from companies of all sizes. As AI reshapes workflows, company structures will reorganise — and as company structures change, so will the culture of the office. And as office culture shifts, the real estate industry transforms with it.

We are already seeing the early signals: commercial real estate demand evolving, data centre investment accelerating, and the entire ecosystem of real estate consultancy, engineering, and architecture adapting to a fundamentally different operating environment.

This transformation operates at three scales simultaneously:

• The individual — new job roles emerging, existing roles being redefined

• The company — size, structure, and nature of organisations shifting

• The industry — sector-wide transformation of how work is organised and delivered

5 - The Risk of Not Taking Risk

Perhaps the most important point raised: in the current AI landscape, the conversation rightly focuses on the risks of AI doing harm, or of people using AI irresponsibly. These are real concerns that deserve serious governance frameworks.

But there is an equally important and often overlooked risk on the other side: not acting is itself a risk. Organisations that delay meaningful AI adoption while waiting for perfect conditions are not playing it safe. They are falling behind in a competitive environment where the gap between early adopters and late movers is widening every quarter.

A budget line item for AI transformation is no longer optional. It is a strategic necessity.
